First Ever Mazda CX-8 Has It All.
The love affair New Zealand motorists have with Mazda’s SUV range is set to continue with the launch of the elegant and versatile First Ever Mazda CX-8.
Powered with the latest version of Mazda’s SKYACTIV-D 2.2L engine, it features a new combustion process called Rapid Multi-Stage Combustion. The new engine has an eye-watering 450Nm torque and peak power of 140kW, with improved fuel consumption and emissions. The result is quieter and more economical performance in low-speed / low-load situations, while also delivering a linear engine sound that matches the degree of acceleration under powerful engine conditions.
The First Ever Mazda CX-8 seven seat SUV continues Mazda’s less-is-more design philosophy and is ideal for those wanting something bigger than the award-winning Mazda CX-5 but slightly smaller than the flagship Mazda CX-9. The Mazda design team has created a vehicle with a premium feel with bold proportions that suggest dynamic performance. Its flowing horizontal theme that combines a compact and stylish cabin silhouette with an imposing lower body.
Mazda New Zealand Managing Director, David Hodge says the First Ever Mazda CX-8 will be a very popular addition to the company’s award-winning SUV line-up.
“We believe it will appeal to private buyers but we also envisage fleets will find it an attractive proposition for those looking for an efficient and versatile vehicle that is equally at home around town or on the open road.”
The front face of the First Ever CX-8 conveys an impression of stability and a low centre of gravity. The use of a piano black garnish on the B and C pillars, and chrome plated moulding for the side windows, accentuates the premium look and feel of the vehicle. Mazda designers have developed an enviable reputation for creating spacious and comfortable cabin interiors and this is further refined in the First Ever Mazda CX-8. The use of Nappa leather and real wood in the Limited model adds a sense of refinement and class while the GSX models get a silver hairline finish similar to metal. The extensive use of chrome plated items in the interior gives an impression of toughness and elegance.
The driver’s cockpit is uncluttered and features the Mazda Connect infotainment system and driver assist technologies. All models come with Active Driving head-up display, automatic powerfold exterior mirrors and vehicle-speed sensing door locks.
To help drivers overcome chilly New Zealand winter mornings, the Limited model has heated steering and they can listen to their favourite music courtesy of a 10-speaker Bose premium audio system. A long rear door window sunshade offers sun protection for rear seat passengers.
While the CX-8’s external proportions are smaller than the CX-9, the designers have delivered an interior with similar dimensions that offers refined comfort for seven people. There is also plenty of storage throughout the cabin as well as four USB ports, essential for those Kiwi road trips to visit friends or family.
Adults and children will have no trouble getting in and out of the rear cabin courtesy of a wide door that opens to 80 degrees. The design of the second row of seating means it can easily be operated by children making accessing the third row of seating easy.
For David Hodge, it was the versatility offered by the CX-8 that was one of the most impressive aspects of the vehicle.
“The variety of configurations means the vehicle can be used in a number of ways from carrying passengers through to using the practical well thought out luggage space that is capable of carrying large and small items. It really does suit the New Zealand lifestyle.”
To ensure the comfort of passengers during summer and winter the CX-8 comes with a three-zone climate control air conditioning system. It has a separate control for the rear of the cabin and vents beneath the second row that provides comfort to third row passengers.
The First Ever Mazda CX-8 is available in three models and two grades and choice of 2WD or AWD. It is available in seven exterior colour options including Mazda’s premium signature colours – Soul Red Crystal and Machine Grey Metallic. Three interior trim options are available across the grades. GSX models adopt Black Sports Cloth with a hairline finish, while Limited models offer premium Nappa Leather with a choice of either Deep Red or Pure White.
